Surrey officially became a city in September of 1993; since that time development and population levels have increased substantially, making Surrey the fastest growing city in British Columbia. The city has managed to maintain its charm despite the fast pace of development due primarily to 35% of the land being designated for agricultural use and 5400 acres for parkland, making Surrey truly the “City of Parks”.

 

Cultural facilities such as the Surrey Arts Centre/Gallery and the Bell Centre for Performing Arts are excellent venues for enjoying visual and performing arts in the community. The Surrey Arts Centre offers regular theatre performances and 4 rotating gallery exhibits, often featuring local artists. The Bell Centre for Performing Arts regularly hosts the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra as well as many other exciting performers.
